The city of Hoofddorp has an interesting history. It was founded in 1853 when the Haarlemmermeer was drained to accommodate two new villages. Hoofddorp has rapidly developed into an important town, due to its location near Schiphol airport. It is becoming a popular place to live for young families. The neighbouring Haarlemmermeerse Bos is a very pleasant recreation park for walkers and picnickers. Hoofddorp is connected by many bus lines to many cities and towns in the immediate surroundings, like Haarlem, Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Zuidoost by the high quality bus line Zuidtangent.
